Part 2: Reform
Chapter Seven: Escape

“What happened?” Walker sat on a stool, drinking a cup of warm water as gathered his thoughts.
“It would have seemed like you were dead,” the old man explained. “You did not breathe, nor did your heart beat. You would have been cremated at that.” He stared deep into Walker’s eyes. “But obviously, you are still alive.” He looked away and turned to another stool beside him; he took a seat and laid his staff on the ground.
“Who are you?” Walker looked at the old man in curiosity.
“A dying man overlooking his final days upon this world, Kimao,” he answered. “But I think the real question is, who are you?” He took a moment to look out the small window. The light of dawn pierced through the thin glass right into the Kimao’s eyes.
Walker looked at the old man in confusion, “what do you mean?”
“What you just experienced, was no ordinary thing my boy.”
“What do you mean? It was a dream! What else could it be?”
“Does a dream really cause a person to turn dead?”
Walker became silent. He was indeed confused, ‘what the hell was that?’ He thought to himself.
Kimao got up from his stool, “tell me, have you ever experienced such an event before?”
Walker’s eyes couldn’t blink, he remembered the incident at the hospital.
“Walker, what you experienced at the hospital and just now was not coincidence.” Wolf took his turn to speak. “Your mind tapped into the darkness.”
“What does that mean?” Walker asked in a shattered voice.
Kimao let out a brief sigh. “It could mean a lot of things, it is very hard to pin point the exact meaning for this occurrence.”
“So it has happened before? To other people?”
“Indeed, this is called ‘the fantasy of darkness’.” Wolf was quick to respond.
“Fantasy of Darkness?”
“It consumes the mind, and if the mind is not strong enough to fight it off, the mind is eventually consumed by the fantasy, leading to death soon after.” Wolf was interrupted.
“But you said it can’t happen within the body of a true mortal!” Isabella stated.
“And as you can see, our young Walker is not a true mortal.” Kimao explained with logic.
“Wait, mortal? What do you mean?” Walker let out a laugh, “Is this some sort of fairy tale? Is there really an immortal?” Walker was obviously trying to be funny as the rest kept silent. Walker looked at them in confusion. “I don’t understand.”
“Walker, Wolf isn’t a mortal like us, he wasn’t joking about not looking his age.”
Wolf stared at Walker.
“Impossible, immortals only exist in the fickle of imagination, in story books and fables…” Walker looked into Wolf’s eyes.
“And now you may stand corrected,” Wolf looked out the window. Outside he saw several guardsmen of the imperial army. “We cannot stay long.”
Kimao looked out the window as well, “we will have to leave as soon as possible if we are to make it out alive.”
“What’s going on?” Isabella questioned.
“The imperial guards must have taken your breakout quite seriously Wolf.” Kimao walked over to pick up his staff.
“As always.”
“What?” Walker jumped to his feet.
“I’ll explain later, we have to move, now!” Wolf grabbed Walker’s coat and threw it at his face.
There was a knock at the door, “By the order of the imperial court, we demand the inhibitors of this household comply to a search warrant, immediately!”
“I love the perfect timings I deal with,” Wolf pulled Isabella from the window.
“Hey!” Isabella almost fell over.
“There’s a backdoor over there,” Wolf pointed out, “Kimao will show you the way.”
“Make it quick Wolf!” Kimao rushed over to the backdoor.
“Stay light-footed and out of sight, I will join up as soon as I can,” Wolf drew his blade.
Walker and Isabella ran out as fast as they could, having found the desperate situation they were stuck in.
