Autumn Dream Excerpt

Chapter 3: Once Upon a starry night

The night was indeed more beautiful then on most other nights, the moonlight was perfect, as it shimmered on the water. I sat to ponder, about the future, the past, everything. The ripples were calm, the wind was present, but it was only a light breeze. I could feel it in my face, brushing my hair to the side, letting it dance with it. It was quite dark, the curfew should be in place by now, but I didn’t care too much for meaningless rules to abide by. I was a rebel at heart, an urge to disobey the law and act out in anyway possible. I didn’t quite understand the many rules that parents and adults set on me, but those days were over now. I was a young man now, or so the villagers told me. I hadn’t a care in the world, or at least, not a whole lot.
“You bum!” I could feel her hand swipe across the back of my head.
“And what did I do this time?” I was quick to turn my head. I met Clarice’s eyes in an instant.
“You know very well what you did my friend,” she sat by me, not too close though. “So how goes the evening?” We looked out at the lake in front, the moonlight just as bright as every other night.
“The horizon is beautiful,” we could see the nearby mountain range against the black sky. The moon’s light gave it shape in the darkness, as the water flowed so peacefully on its own. It was a fairly secluded spot in the forest, we could barely hear the crowd at the camp as they were partying and socializing.
“Why weren’t you with the rest of the crowd? I came out looking for you worried sick!”
“And why should I care?” I didn’t
She gave a look of arrogance, “oh little child, how I wish you would grow up one day.”
I gave a short laugh, nothing more then that.
“I think I heard something!” The voice came from a distance, but it was clear enough to give the signal.
“Where should we run to this time?” This wasn’t the first time we have run away from Eleanor, considering her sheer determination to ruin any sort of privacy we had. We gave each other looks of craftiness and the sheer joy of frolicking in the dark woods past curfew brought back oh sweet dear memories from childhood. We darted out like the small children we strived to be.
The moon was still high in the sky, and the clouds were not in sight. It was hard to see in the dark, especially when one was successively dodging trees and branches to keep from breaking a bone or two.
“This is truly exhilarating!” I remembered that same tone of voice, as if I had been pushed back in time in a single second as I heard that sweet voice of Clarice in our childhood together. I was simply speechless, it was too much fun. I turned back to face what was up ahead. The fir trees that past me towered the skies like ceilings in the woods by the lake, I could hear the sounds of whooshing twigs and leaves as I brushed them abruptly as I did not care to dodge the very essence of which what blocked my vision on the road up ahead, if there was one. I turned back to look at Clarice, or so I wanted to. I slowed myself down to a stop.
“Clarice?” I waited for an answer.
“Clarice?” I shouted louder.
“Clarice!” My heart started to pound faster. Had something happened to her? I knew we shouldn’t have ran in the dark woods past curfew. Oh what cruel fate this must be! I sat down on a nearby rock. Perhaps she would catch up with me, until I realized, I wasn’t in the dark woods any longer.
